Ranchi : SwitchON Foundation in association with Jharkhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (JREDA) had organized a Decentralised Renewable Energy Expo in Ranchi. The event brought together various businesses, trade associations, government agencies, and energy policy research organizations to showcase the status and potential of the renewable energy industry in Jharkhand.

The expo is being organized in a time when there is a paradigm shift in the global trend towards massive deployment of solar power and other renewable energy along with investments worth billions of dollars in technology and green energy. The event was done in partnership with CLEAN and Power for All.

Various companies like Shakti Pumps, Resham Sutra etc were part of this expo where they showcased their latest technologies using renewable energy, including popular non conventional forms like solar, biogas & biomass, small hydro and wind technology.

Such high tech alternatives to traditional usage of diesel operated machines is seen as a boon for the marginalized section of the society who has been suffering from the frequent increase in diesel prices. Alternative forms of energy also help them reduce their cost drastically over time and allow them to operate at lower cost enabling important savings.

Given India’s ambitious renewable energy goals we are at the verge of transforming our power sector. Rising population and widespread electrification in rural homes is fuelling the demand for energy to power homes, businesses and thereby empower communities. Promotion of DRE will help the people to shift from diesel operated machines to DRE machines which will eventually double their income.

Shri Jay Nigam Deputy General Manager, NABARD, also present at the event said, “It’s a win-win situation for us as such alternate forms of clean energy not just helps reduce pollution levels in the region but also helps villages become self – sustainable.”

Shri Bijay Kr. Sinha, Project Director JREDA said, “We want to develop a common platform for sharing knowledge on renewable energy and various DRE technologies in use. This would be helpful for all stakeholders, including the entrepreneurs, and financiers at the same time facilitates a dialogue between decision makers and consumers enabling a linkage between demand and supply side.”

Shri Deepak Upadhaya, Project Director JSLPS, said, “Harnessing power through renewable energy has been proven to alleviate poverty by generating new income opportunities as well as saving money. We are  providing clean, reliable power and doubling SHG incomes.”

Vinay Jaju, MD SwitchON Foundation said, “There has been steady progress in renewable energy usage across Jharkhand, as it is progressively emerging as a leader through the various programmes launched by JREDA. Our efforts will continue to support and complement these efforts and programmes to enable a clean energy future for all in the state.”

Ms. Rekha Krishnan, CEO, The CLEAN Network, said, “The industry association for decentralized renewable energy (DRE) is happy to support the state of Jharkhand by facilitating deployment of a range of RE technologies, DRE technologies can provide reliable, clean energy to support the state in expanding its livelihoods activities and to deliver critical community services like education, healthcare and drinking water. Solar pumps, solar cold storage, RE-powered dryers, solar textile machines, clean cooking solutions, RE-powered mini grids are all examples of DRE relevant for Jharkhand.”

Jharkhand boys, who beat poverty to follow their passion, have entered Khelo India Youth Games hockey semifinal https://indiaeducationdiary.in/jharkhand-boys-who-beat-poverty-to-follow-their-passion-have-entered-khelo-india-youth-games-hockey-semifinal/ Thu, 09 Jun 2022 05:03:17 +0000 https://indiaeducationdiary.in/?p=278877 In March 2021, Jharkhand created history by winning the 11th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men’s National Championship.

They had, however, already scored a much more significant and crucial victory. Almost each member of the squad had waged a long and grim battle against poverty and hardship before making it into the team.

Manohar Mundu, 17, among the brightest in the lineup, lost his father when he was just a child. Like most kids around him, he started playing hockey with a bamboo stick.

This is all they could afford to pursue their passion. “We would play the entire day; it didn’t matter that we didn’t have any equipment,” he said shortly after their match in the Khelo India Youth Games.

Even after he was admitted into the Jharkhand Awasiya Balak Hockey Prashikshan Kendra in Khunti, the Residential School for Sports that supports 25 budding athletes in each district, Manohar’s travails didn’t end.

He still didn’t have money to buy shoes or a stick. He had to make do with hand-me-downs. Luckily, his coach was a generous man. He bought him his first pair of shoes and a nice hockey stick. His friend’s family too bailed him out once.

Abhishek Mundu’s father is a policeman. But he didn’t earn enough to send his son to an academy for training. Even the expense for daily commute was beyond him. Their coach Manohar Topno somehow convinced Abhishek’s father to not give hope, to send his son to the residential school.

“There is back-breaking poverty in the region. During the Covid lockdown, each player, still just boys, had to work, do all kinds of menial stuff, to support their families. Even adults cannot balance two lives, the way these boys do,” Topno says with a tinge of anger.

Duga Munda came to the residential school very young. “I keep going back home to help my father with farm work. We can’t hire labour. My parents feel happy seeing my progress but making ends meet is still quite a task.”

Another boy in the team from the government-run Awasiya Centre is Bilsan Dodrey. He comes from a village lost deep in the forest.

Poverty has different shades within the state, though. In the same hockey team, the boys in Eklavya Model Residential Schools and Tata Academy live in AC rooms and get a diet worth Rs 450 a day. The boys from Awasiya Centre, however, get a diet of Rs 150 to 175 per day.

Yet they play on the same turf and get medals. They learn about modern facilities and tactics by watching videos and participating in tournaments.

They are now poised to create history in the Khelo India Games too. Both their Boys and Girls teams are already in the semifinals. They are confident of winning at least one gold.

With close to 50 face transplants carried out in 11 countries around the world to date, a new report addresses the urgent need to set a standard of care to ensure the procedure is ethical and as safe and effective as possible for patients.

The report, led by the University of York and King’s College Policy Institute, is designed as a guide to help doctors and surgeons make decisions on if and how they should go ahead with face transplant procedures.

With contributors including doctors, psychologists, ethicists, historians and mental health professionals from 19 countries, the report strongly recommends that individual patient circumstances and perspectives should be at the heart of all clinical decisions.

Complex

Lead author of the report, Professor Fay Bound Alberti, from the Department of History and the AboutFace Project at the University of York, said “Just because we have the clinical expertise to perform a face transplant doesn’t always mean we should. The need for immunosuppressants means that the procedure is likely to shorten a patient’s life and there are multiple ethical considerations which run deeper than deciding whether the procedure is clinically viable for an individual. For example, we must consider how a patient will cope with the complex emotions surrounding this surgery; whether they are well-informed about the outcomes to expect; how they will be supported in dealing with likely media attention, and the ongoing financial and physical costs.

“A face transplant can make all the difference to the quality of life of a person with a severe facial injury, but it’s important that wherever in the world the procedure is being considered, medical teams have guidance on how to ensure patients are at the centre of decisions.

“The expertise of researchers from arts and humanities disciplines, alongside the expertise of those from the fields of science and medicine, has played a vital role in bringing patient perspectives to the fore in this blueprint.”

Concerns

A face transplant is yet to be carried out in the UK. In 2003 the Royal College of Surgeons published a report concluding the procedure should not be performed, due to multiple unresolved ethical concerns.

The blueprint aims to tackle those concerns by addressing six key themes – Patient selection and expectations; Patient support; Clinical framework; Data on patient progress & outcomes; Public image & perception, and Financial sustainability. The themes were set by the lead authors of the report based on qualitative research with face transplant patients, carried out as part of the AboutFace project at the University of York.

Pioneering

Professor Vijay Gorantla, President of the International Society for Vascularised Composite Allotransplantation, said: “The policy lab is a pioneering international attempt to develop expert consensus guidelines on issues spanning program, patient, policy, provider, and payer aspects of face transplantation. It focuses on safety and efficacy, cost coverage and value of interventions, access and equity, ethics and standards of practice”.

Jharkhand : Re-emphasizing the need for road safety awareness among the people to build a collision-free India post COVID era, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India’s (HMSI) National Road Safety Awareness Campaign reaches Dhanbad in Jharkhand.

The two-days camp (30-31st May 2022) at the Raja Shiv Prasad College in Dhanbad, Jharkhand witnessed spirited participation from over 1,500 college students and staff members who set out to imbibe the safe riding practices. HMSI’s road safety instructors utilized the age appropriate road safety learning programs to enhance the retention of road safety awareness among all.

Speaking on HMSI’s commitment towards sensitizing India on road safety, Mr. Prabhu Nagaraj, Operating Officer – Brand & Communication, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said, “Road safety education is essential for developing a road safety mindset. Continuing to further strengthen our commitment of building a safer India on roads, we have resumed our on-ground road safety training – National Road Safety Awareness Campaign. With this campaign, we aim to cultivate the right road safety habits amongst the new and upcoming riders as well as help adults in understanding the importance of using the roads safely.”

Honda’s National Road Safety Awareness program made learning fun yet scientific through:

  1. SCIENTIFICALLY DEVISED LEARNING MODULE: Honda’s skilled instructors set the foundation with theory sessions on road signs & markings, driver’s duties on road, riding gear & posture explanation and safe riding etiquettes.
  2. PRCTICAL LEARNING: A special training activity on Honda’s virtual riding simulator was executed for all to experience over 100 possible dangers on road before actual riding.
  3. INTERACTIVE SESSION: Participants were given danger prediction training known as Kiken Yosoku Training (KYT) which helps in enhancing rider/driver’s sensitivity to danger and ensures safe driving action on roads.
  4. EXISTING DRIVERS HONING RIDING SKILLS: Students & school staff members who are already existing riders tested & honed their riding skills through slow riding activities and riding on narrow planks.
  5. LEARNING IN A FUN WAY: To ensure that the young students could learn more about road safety, Honda also conducted fun educational activities like road safety games and quizzes on daily basis

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s CSR commitment towards Road Safety:

For Honda globally, road safety comes first. As announced in April 2021, “Honda will strive for zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050”. Fulfilling its corporate social responsibility (CSR), HMSI has been promoting road safety in India since its start in 2001. Working towards the realization of Honda’s global safety vision, today HMSI’s road safety awareness initiative has already spread to over 45 lac Indians. Its team of skilled safety instructors conduct daily programmes at its 10 adopted traffic parks across India and 7 Safety Driving Education Centres (SDEC).

Not only this, all 1000+ dealerships of HMSI across India spread road safety awareness. HMSI’s proprietary virtual riding simulator increases the risk-prediction ability of riders; while new customers too are given predelivery safety advice (PDSA) before they start riding at every dealership across India.

Additionally, ensuring that learning doesn’t stop in the New Normal, HMSI started the digital road safety education initiative – Honda Road Safety E-Gurukul. Since its start in May’20, this initiative has sensitized 7 Lac+ Indians on importance of being aware & responsible road users.
