JNMC doctors carry out a complex surgery on 10 year old boy https://indiaeducationdiary.in/jnmc-doctors-carry-out-a-complex-surgery-on-10-year-old-boy/ Tue, 25 Jul 2023 11:27:59 +0000 https://indiaeducationdiary.in/?p=429189

ALIGARH  : A team of cardiothoracic surgeons at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University performed a complex surgery on a 10 year old boy, Kanishk, a resident of Aligarh, to correct the congenital anomaly of heart in him, who later recovered well and was discharged in stable condition from the hospital.

Prof. Mohd Azam Haseen, Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, who led the team of doctors, including Dr Shamayal Rabbani and Dr. Ghazanfar, said that Kanishk used to turn blue on feeding and was not gaining weight for which his parents consulted several centres without any relief.

Later, through the District Early Intervention Centre Aligarh, he consulted Dr. Shaad Abqari and Dr. Moaz Kidwai, Pediatric Cardiologist at Inter-departmental Pediatric Cardiac Centre (IPCC), AMU, who diagnosed a complex congenital anomaly of heart showing only three proper chambers with a hole in heart, while the fourth was not developed. Dr. Mehtab Ahmad, an expert in Cardiac Radiology, conducted his Cardiac CT, which further delineated the exact anatomical nature of the problem.

Prof Haseen said that surgery was performed in two phases, the first in 2021 and the second in July 2023, free of cost, under the Rashtriya Bal Swathya Karyakram (RBSK), granted to JNMC by National Health Mission (NHM).

Dr Ghazanfar said that more than 500 hundred free cardiac surgeries have been done at JNMC under RBSK in past few years.

Dr Shaad Abqari, Nodal Officer, IPCC said there is a long waiting list of children at JNMC who need cardiac intervention as there are only a few centres in Uttar Pradesh doing complex pediatric surgeries.

Prof. Veena Maheshwari, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Prof. Harris Manzoor, Principal and CMS, JNMCH congratulated the teams involved in the surgery of Kanishk. She said it is a proud moment for us as despite limitations, JNMC doctors are carrying out such technically difficult and costly surgeries free of cost.
