Mumbai : Five thousand first-year undergraduate students from 27 states and four Union Territories will be awarded the Reliance Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships for 2022-23. Selected scholars will receive a grant of up to Rs. 2 lakh and an opportunity to be part of an enabling alumni network.

The Reliance Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded on merit-cum-means basis to students in any stream of study. Further reflecting the diversity inherent to the programme, this round saw selection of 99 students with disabilities for award of scholarships.

Blindness due to cataracts and refractive errors remains a major public health concern in India, especially in rural areas, where the shortage of trained eye care professionals results in delayed diagnosis and treatment. To address this issue, Sightsavers India has launched a unique 24-month fellowship program for promising and passionate young ophthalmologists to get trained at some of India’s leading eye health institutes and apply these skills and knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Sumit, 21, won the 2022 Sydney Scholars India Equity Scholarship, worth up to $60,000 and arrived in Sydney in February 2023 to begin his postgraduate studies. The scholarship was created for exceptional students residing in the slum communities of Delhi, in collaboration with Indian charity, the Asha Community Health and Development Society (Asha).

Sumit described the challenges of growing up in a slum environment. “Every night I would use a small battery-operated light to study after the other members of my family went to sleep. I would wake up in the mornings to stand in a long line to fill water from the common street tap. There were also problems like petty crime, violence and drinking.”

After achieving a mark of 95 percent in his senior secondary school exams, the team at Asha spotted Sumit’s potential and provided financial assistance for him to complete his Bachelor of Arts (Economics and Political Science) at the University of Delhi. The first in his family to go to university, Sumit was motivated to continue his education by Asha founder and director, Dr Kiran Martin, who became his mentor; and his father, a tailor for the neighbourhood.

“My father was a very good student at school but couldn’t continue his studies because of his financial circumstances – he had to work after my grandfather died quite early. His dream for me is to stand on my own feet and be successful in life,” said Sumit.

After arriving in Sydney, one of the first things Sumit did was sign up for swimming classes at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre.

“If you are in Australia, you should know swimming! I went to Manly beach but couldn’t go in the water because I didn’t know how to swim. So now I’m doing water safety classes and planning to go back.”

Following his studies Sumit hopes to develop his career as a policy analyst in the corporate sector and use his skills to support his local community back home.

“My goal is to return to India and ‘pay it forward’ by contributing to the development and improvement of my community. I would also like to become a role model for younger students and inspire them to dream big.”

As Sumit begins his degree, Tushar Joshi, winner of the 2021 Sydney Scholars India Equity Scholarship, is completing his final semester of a Master of International Relations. After initially studying remotely due to the pandemic, Tushar was able to come to Australia and enjoy campus and Sydney life.

The participating individuals and organisations are evaluated on the key parameters of Market-based, Technology-enabled, Sustainability, Direct Social Impact, Reach & Scope, Replicability. The finalists will be selected following an intensive search and selection process, including expert reviews, interviews and site visits. The winner is selected by a prominent jury consisting of eminent leaders and professionals from the Government, Business, Media, and Civil Society.

The Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) India Award aims to promote and celebrate leading social entrepreneurs and their unique ventures in India that help in addressing the various gaps in our society and country. Through providing recognition, the SEOY India Award hopes to inspire many other potential social entrepreneurs in India every year.

In 2010, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and Jubilant Bhartia Foundation came together to promote social innovation in India through the Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) Award – India and they have since recognised and supported the growing field of social innovation in India. This year the SEOY Award – India celebrates its 14^th year. Over the last decade it has established itself as one of the most respectable awards for social entrepreneurs in India.

The award recognises individuals and organisations who implement innovative, sustainable and scalable solutions to address pressing issues faced by under-served communities to make inclusive growth a reality in India. They work in diverse areas such as health, education, employment, water, clean energy, building identity & entitlements, financial literacy, access to information and technology among others.

Aniket Doegar from Haqdarshak Empowerment Solutions won the Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) Award – India 2022, presented by Shri. Anurag Singh Thakur, Hon. Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. Haqdarshak Empowerment Solutions is solving the information and access gap between citizens and the government’s welfare schemes at the last mile, through its tech-enabled intervention. Present in 24 states in India it has trained over 22,800 agents and provided benefits worth Rs 4,000 crore for over 20 lakh families and 35,000 micro businesses.

Applying for the programme is the first step in a detailed 4-stage process which tests students on academic and technical parameters, as well as creativity, innovation and presentation skills.

The IET India Scholarship Award 2023 is led by a highly empowered and respected Advisory Committee, comprising academicians and corporate professionals of national repute who helped build a strong framework for the award. The committee is chaired by Prof. Abhijit Chakrabarti, Former Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Chairman, IET India Scholarship Award Advisory Committee.

Echoing Mr. Sanyal’s views, Prof. Chakrabarti said, “It gives me immense pleasure to announce the opening of the seventh edition of the IET India Scholarship Award. This scholarship provides a platform for undergraduate engineering students to showcase their abilities and innovation in front of industry stalwarts and academicians. We hope that through this program, we can inspire and empower undergraduate students to pursue excellence in engineering, as well as motivate these young minds to think about the role of technology in solving challenges that we face today.”

The award evaluation comprises four stages. The initial stage involves an online application where applicants are evaluated based on their academic, extra-curricular, outreach, and professional performance, with varying weightages assigned to each category. In the second stage, shortlisted candidates are required to take an online test to have their proficiency and technical knowledge gauged in relevant subjects. The highest scoring 10% of students will be invited to take part in the in-person Regional Assessments at 5 regional centres where candidates present their technological solutions to region-specific challenges, to be evaluated by a panel of experts. The Regional winners then proceed to the 4th stage – National Finals – where the national winner will be awarded.

The previous edition of the award drew close to 29,000 entries, with the national and regional winners felicitated by Mrr. Suresh Prabhu, Former Union Minister and 6-time Member of Parliament, at the IET India’s Future Tech Congress 2022. The programme aims to reward innovative thinking from the next crop of engineers entering the workforce and is part of a wide number of IET India initiatives focused on improving the quality of engineering in India.
